Vigo County Jail Custody
The Vigo County Sheriff's Office jail page identifies the Vigo County Jail as the county's adult jail division at 600 West Honey Creek Drive in Terre Haute. The new jail opened in 2022 and the official page states that it has capacity for over 400 inmates. The jail is operated by the sheriff's office under jail command staff and more than 70 correctional officers. Its main population is people awaiting court, people awaiting sentencing, and local inmates who have not moved into Indiana Department of Correction or federal Bureau of Prisons custody.
That distinction matters in Terre Haute because Vigo County contains both a county jail and a large federal correctional complex. A person arrested by a local police agency normally enters the Vigo County Jail record system first. A person serving a federal sentence at FCI Terre Haute or USP Terre Haute is not on the Vigo County Jail roster. A person sentenced to an Indiana prison is searched through the Indiana Department of Correction locator, not through the county jail once the transfer posts.
The sheriff's jail page also describes daily jail services that help identify the right office. The jail division handles inmate mail, commissary, medical care, court transport, transport to other institutions, and food service. Research found that the jail kitchen also provides meals for juvenile detainees, Community Corrections, and two additional county jail facilities. Those local operating details support the jail's role as the main intake and custody hub for Vigo County.
The official Vigo jail overview is shown on the sheriff's jail information page.

Vigo County Jail Population
For current facility size, the safest official number is the sheriff's own capacity phrase: over 400 inmates. Research also found dated news context from 2023 describing 495 physical beds, about a 400-person operational target under an 80 percent standard, 375 inmates on a visit day, and 40 people housed in surrounding counties. Because that reporting is not the sheriff's current official capacity statement, it should be read as background, not as a live jail count.
| Measure | Figure | Source Context |
|---|---|---|
| Current official capacity wording | Over 400 inmates | Vigo Sheriff Jail Information page, inspected June 12, 2026 |
| News-reported physical beds | 495 beds | 21Alive report from July 20, 2023 |
| News-reported operating target | About 400 people | Outside reporting, not current official ADP |
| Old jail rated beds after expansion | 268 beds | Vigo jail and criminal justice assessment |
The population history is a major part of Vigo County Jail records. The official jail assessment documented that the old jail exceeded operating capacity every day from January 1, 2003 through May 30, 2018, and exceeded total capacity about 84 percent of days over more than 15 years. That history explains why the current jail capacity and facility identity should be stated with care.
Look Up Vigo County Jail Records
The sheriff's jail page links to a JailTracker public-safety-cloud roster for Vigo County. During research, that roster showed a loading state and then an application error. The direct sheriff link remains the first official route, but the practical fallback is the Indiana County Jail Public Portal, known as INjail. The INjail county API confirmed Vigo County with FIPS 18167 and county code 84. If both online routes fail, call the jail at the number in the contact card and ask whether the person is held, released, transferred, or listed under another agency's case.
- Start with the sheriff jail page and select the Inmate Lookup link for Vigo County Jail.
- If the sheriff-linked roster loads, search the available fields and open the inmate profile.
- If that page errors, open INjail and search by last name with County set to Vigo.
- Add first name, birth date, booked date, or released date filters when the name is common.
- Open the View link and compare booking number, arrest date, agency, holds, and cases.
- Use IDOC for sentenced Indiana prisoners and BOP for federal prisoners in Terre Haute.
| INjail Field | Use | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Name search | At least one search value is required |
| First Name | Narrows common names | Optional text field |
| Birth Date | Identity check | Optional date picker |
| County | Local filter | Use Vigo when available |
| Booked Between | Recent booking search | Includes preset date ranges |
| Released Between | Recent release search | Useful when a person no longer appears in custody |
The INjail detail component can show name, INjail ID, demographics, booking number, booked-on date, arrest date, arresting agency, arresting officer, release date, holds, cases, and a public inmate photo component when a photo is available. For a deeper explanation of roster fields, see the Vigo County jail inmate records page.
Vigo County Jail Contact
Use the jail contact channel for custody confirmation, roster problems, mail questions, and local jail services. The jail administration email is for administrative contact, not emergency custody confirmation. Bring identification for in-person public counter questions, and confirm hours before travel because jail operations can restrict access during security events.

Vigo County Jail Visits
Vigo County Jail visitation is video based. The official inmate visitation page directs visitors to InmateSales tools for onsite and remote video visits. Visits must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance. Eligible inmates receive one free onsite visit each week, but the official source says the free onsite visit must be scheduled onsite or in person. All communication and visitation may be monitored and recorded.
| Visit Type | Scheduling Rule | Source Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Onsite video | Use Schedule Video Visitation in InmateSales | One free onsite visit each week for eligible inmates |
| Remote video | Use Remote Video Visitation and InmateSales-View | App may route users to the app store |
| Deadline | Schedule at least 24 hours ahead | Applies to onsite and remote video visits |
| Professional visits | Credentials required | Not during listed meal and count windows |
| Monitoring | Recorded and monitored | Misconduct can end visits and affect future access |
Recording devices, cell phones, and cameras are not allowed in the visitation area. Lewd, revealing, violent, illegal, disruptive, or unsafe conduct can end a visit and lead to denial of future visits. Professional visitors may be approved with authorized credentials, but the jail excludes certain periods such as 6:30-8:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m., and 4:30-6:00 p.m.
Vigo County Jail Mail
The Vigo inmate mail page gives the required mail format and the jail's scanned-mail rule. Mail must include the inmate's full name and booking number. It also must include the sender's full name and address. The jail checks mail for contraband but says it does not censor mail. If restricted items are included, the entire letter may be returned.
| Service | Provider or Detail |
|---|---|
| Mail Address | Inmate name and booking number, Vigo County Jail, 600 West Honey Creek Drive, Terre Haute, Indiana 47802 |
| Mail Handling | Mail is scanned into inmate kiosks and physical letters are placed in inmate property |
| Restricted Mail | No packages, currency, personal checks, stamps, food, Polaroids, or books not sent by publisher |
| Money Deposit | Lobby kiosk, 1-877-998-5678, or deposits.jailatm.com |
| Commissary | Board games, snacks, and pharmacy items are listed examples |
The sheriff's bond and commissary pages name Jail ATM and Inmate Sales, but the research did not capture detailed deposit fees or phone rates. Do not assume a fee. Confirm the charge in the vendor screen before sending money. The jail medical page lists a $15 co-pay for doctor visits, nurse sick call, medication co-pay, and dental visits, with emergency care available through a local hospital when needed.
Vigo County Jail Intake
Vigo County has not published a full step-by-step intake page, so the reliable local facts come from the roster fields and jail service pages. A typical Vigo County Jail booking begins after arrest or warrant service, followed by transport to the jail, identification, property collection, search, fingerprints, photo collection when applicable, medical or mental-health screening, classification, bond or first appearance scheduling, and housing assignment.
INjail fields support that sequence because public detail records can include arrest date, booking number, booked-on date, arresting agency, arresting officer, holds, cases, and release date. A hold is a notice that another court or agency may have an interest in the person. Classification means the jail's process for assigning housing and supervision level. A local booking does not prove guilt. Charges can change after the prosecutor reviews the case, and court status must be checked through the court record system.
Note: Confirm custody and visit approval with Vigo County Jail before travel, because roster status and visit access can change quickly.
